Dr David Abi-Hanna is a Sydney trained consultant gastroenterologist with a major interest and expertise in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.

Dr Abi-Hanna’s undergraduate medical education began in 1982 at the University of New South Wales, Randwick and was completed in 1989. Whilst undertaking his medical studies, Dr Abi-Hanna was involved in scientific research which resulted in the awarding of a Bachelor of Medical Science degree and subsequently, the awarding of a PhD in the field of Immunology in 1988.

Dr Abi-Hanna’s post graduate medical training was undertaken at the Prince of Wales Hospital, followed by advanced training in the specialty of Gastroenterology at Prince of Wales and then Westmead Hospitals. He completed his specialty training and was awarded Fellow ship of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1997 (FRACP). During training, he received conjoint committee certification in the procedures of Gastroscopy, Colonoscopy and ERCP and began work as a visiting medical officer at Liverpool hospital in 1998. In 2008 he undertook a 6 month sabbatical in France, gaining training and expertise in the procedure of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) for which he has also gained certification by the conjoint committee. More recently, Dr Abi-Hanna has gained recertification in the field of colonoscopy through the Gastroenterology Society of Australia recertification program in colonoscopy.

Dr Abi-Hanna is the Head of Endoscopy at Liverpool Hospital and past Chairman of the Conjoint Committee; a national body responsible for certification of training in endoscopic procedures. Dr Abi-Hanna is a board member of the South Western Sydney Area Health Service, where he also chairs the research and teaching committee of the board.

At Liverpool day surgery, Dr Abi-Hanna is dedicated to providing best outcomes to his patients.  He performs Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy with a selected number of therapeutic procedures, such as oesophageal dilation and polypectomy. More recently he has begun performing EUS since this equipment has been made available at LDS. Dr Abi-Hanna sits on the Medical Advisory Council of Liverpool Day Surgery and is currently the chair of this advisory body.
