Dr Katherine Gibson is a specialist Colorectal Surgeon providing consulting and surgical services to patients in Liverpool and Campbelltown.
Dr Gibson graduated from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, University of London in 1997 and carried out her surgical training in Australia where she obtained Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2006.
She then spent a year at Liverpool Hospital as the Senior Surgical Registrar before undergoing a two year specialist Fellowship with the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand,
training in Sydney and Melbourne.
Having been based at Liverpool Hospital for most of her general surgical training, Dr Gibson has a strong affinity for South Western Sydney and after completing her CSSANZ Fellowship in 2010, Dr Gibson took up positions as a Colorectal Surgeon at Liverpool Hospital and later at Campbelltown Hospital.
Prior to her medical training Dr Gibson attended Rhodes University in South Africa where
she obtained her MSc in 1987. She subsequently worked as a molecular biochemist in London developing an early diagnostic test for HIV prior to starting her medical training. She has several publications in this field, including a book chapter.
Dr Gibson has a primary interest in laparoscopic surgery for colorectal disease, particularly colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. She also has an interest in the surgical management of perianal conditions and anal fistula.
Dr Gibson is accredited through the Gastroenterological Society of Australia in both upper and lower endoscopy, although colonoscopy forms the bulk of her endoscopic practice.
