Fertility Services at Liverpool Day Surgery (LDS)
The ART process
Ovarian Stimulation is achieved by injections of FSH. Mild Ovarian Stimulation (MOS) is a new form of IVF specifically designed to make the process of falling pregnant easier and faster, with fewer side effects and less emotional drain than traditional methods.
Dr Tang is one of the first in Australia to move to the routine use of the new Mild Ovarian Stimulation approach in IVF treatment. The aim of MOS therapy is to help women get pregnant sooner while minimising side effects.
The nature of this approach has several advantages, which include:
MOS is a state-of-the-art procedure providing a safer, less demanding and more cost-effective alternative to conventional IVF where high doses of fertility hormones are applied to generate as many eggs for collection as possible. Unlike traditional IVF where as many eggs are retrieved in the initial treatment phase as possible MOS involves the retrieval of fewer developing eggs but ones of a higher quality. This approach reduces the need for high doses of fertility hormones and in turn decreases potential risks to the patient.
Egg collection is performed under ultrasound guidance, carried out in an operating theatre at LDS. The ultrasound is inserted into the vagina and the attached needle is advanced so that it passes gently through the top wall of the vagina. The needle is inserted into one follicle after another and the follicles are emptied, and the collected fluid is passed to the embryologist at LDS. The embryologist uses a microscope to locate and retrieve the eggs. The procedure is usually performed under General Anaesthetics and takes 15-30 minutes. After the procedure, you will be taken to the recovery room, and you are usually discharged after a few hours.
The male partner can collect the semen sample at LDS in an allocated room for convenience. Your partner or family can accompany you home. You should avoid driving or strenuous activity for 24 hours from the time of your anaesthetics. If the male partner has a surgical sperm collection at the same time as the female partner has her egg collection, you should arrange a third person to take you home.
Other procedures such as Surgical sperm collection, and some Embryo transfer are also performed at LDS.
Embryology at City Fertility
Eggs and Sperm are fertilised at City Fertility Liverpool and embryos will be cultured. Usually a single embryo will be transferred within 2 to 5 days. This procedure is similar to a pap smear, which will only take 10 minutes. Additional embryos with good quality will be frozen for future use.
